I just noticed Stephen King has a LOT of projects coming up that I'm pretty excited about. This is my attempt to keep them straight, so I don't miss anything. I'm doing it publicly since it's quite likely other people would like to have this sort of list too, but have less time on their hands than I do while at work.

1. Under the Dome. New book. Out now. I've got it on hold with the library, so whenever it comes in, I'll read it.

2. The Talisman. Comic series adaptation. Already started with Del Ray* (issue 0 is out, 1 is next Wednesday).

3. The Dark Tower. Comic series adaptation and expansion (Roland's teen years). Still running with Marvel*. Current story arc: Fall of Gilead. Final story arc coming in December: The Battle of Jericho Hill.

4. The Stand. Comic book series adaptation. Still running with Marvel*. Current story arc: Soul Survivors.

5. The Dark Tower Project, AKA Discordia. Animated series. Dark Tower spinoff exploring the struggle between Sombra and TET Corporations. Coming November 30.

6. Ghost Brothers of Darkland County. Musical, book, CD, etc. After about a DECADE in the works, it looks like King's collaboration with John Mellencamp will finally be completed some time between January and April 2010.**

7. American Vampire. Original comic series starting in March with Vertigo*.

8. The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger. Comic book series adaptation and expansion (Roland's pursuit of The Man in Black). Coming in 2010 with Marvel*.

9. A NEW DARK TOWER BOOK. A real book (working title The Wind Through the Keyhole). Not a comic book or some shit, the real deal. It won't be out for ages, since he's not starting it until some time next year, but STILL. OMG. I don't think I've ever been this excited about any kind of entertainment before.

* I think it's cool that even though King started with Marvel (with The Dark Tower, and then The Stand), he wasn't locked into some sort of weird, overbearing contract and was able to do The Talisman with Del Ray (whose comic department is new and could use the boost) and American Vampire with DC (Marvel's only real competitor).

** I don't know if the play is going to travel, but if I have to go to Atlanta, so be it!

I've never seen the show, but it seems like it glorifies plastic surgery, which doesn't seem like the best idea to me. It pisses me off to no end that there have been posters advertising this show hanging in my gym (in case people weren't self conscious enough about their bodies). I honestly didn't really give the show much thought, though, until I saw the ad above, for reasons you'll see below.

I'm a little weirded out by them conflating plastic surgery and body modification. Yes, in a way, it does make some sense, since they're both changing the body. And yes, I do think the ad is clever, taking something that's really just for aesthetics and making it seem functional, but the function is, of course, making the woman thinner.

Part of the culture surrounding body mods is acceptance of pretty much any and all bodies (I think the cellulite surrounding my mods supports this). Yes, thinner, more classically "attractive" people tend to show off their mods more, but that's because of individual insecurity issues, not so much because people will poke fun at a larger person with a great tattoo. The BME blog is a great example of a community supportive of all (modified) body types. Scrawny hipsters are posted right next to enormous bikers and pretty much all the comments are on the work, which is great.

So yeah, I guess I'm a little bothered by the idea of something that so totally goes against most of what the mod community stands for utilizing it to try to make it appear edgy or daring (especially since it's really neither; if I can do it, it's no big deal!).
