Moo Cards?

Do any of you use Moo MiniCards? If so, what do you think of them? How are they received? How did you format the text?

Every once in a while, I think about how annoying it is to tell people my email address and/or phone number when I meet them and think it'd be great to have cards. Then I think frankly, I don't meet that many new people and I should stop being a lazy twat. But then I think about how cute a card would be with this on one side and a little image of grilled asparagus or an artichoke on the other.

And I don't have a business. I have a blog. And I think it's pure assholery to make business cards to advertise your blog (that's just taking the Internet too damn seriously). I don't want to advertise my blog, I want to "advertise" my me, but I think it could come off as just as assholey because without the blog URL on it, the card would look pretty naked.

And I'm not even sure which email address I'd use!

It's a pity LJ isn't doing that Moo promotion it did ages ago again :P

So...yeah...thoughts?

WHAT THE FUCK?!?

I just received the following email:

Hello Fellow New Yorkers,

Some bad news: State Senate Bill 1284, which will allow 14- and 15-year-olds to hunt big game with firearms under mentored conditions, passed the State Senate with overwhelming support! Its companion bill in our State Assembly, A733a, is now sitting in the Assembly Environmental Conservation Committee. If this bill passes here, bad news will turn into horrible news! We must stop it now!

WHAT WE CAN DO:

Please write a postcard to Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver to politely, yet firmly urge him to use his authority as the leader of our State Assembly to DEFEAT Bill A733a. Remind him that accidental deaths can still occur even with a mentor present. (For more Talking Points, see below.)

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver
250 Broadway, Room 2307
New York, NY 10007

Note: In previous alerts, I have asked you all to call and/or e-mail. In this particular case, it is very important that we send a written note because Silver’s office is getting bombarded with notes from hunters who want the bill passed.

Talking points )

This is unbefreakingleivable. Cars are too dangerous for them but guns are OK? Blows my fucking mind. And an overwhelming number of hunters want their kids to be able to shoot themselves in the face. Awesome.

(Holy crap, look at me, using LJ three days in a row!)

I. Am. IRON CHICK!

Got the results of my physical back today. I'm not anemic for the first time in...eons. I can give blood again! The last time anyone was willing to take my blood was September 2001 and that was just because there was a shortage. I was technically anemic, but I was so close to normal that the nurse decided to take me anyway. I'm so excited!

Also, my cholesterol is super low and everything else that should be low is low and whatever should be high is high.

Thank you, veganism!

ETA: Speaking of iron, I'm eating lunch and my kale's gone bad. It looked sort of questionable when I made the salad last night, but now it smells like wet dog. Thank goodness it was at the bottom of the container, so it didn't contaminate much of the other vegetables. Or, to look at it from another perspective, I ate 3/4 of a salad before realizing it was full of spoiled kale and smelled like wet dog. Is my salad half empty or half full?

THANK YOU!

Thank you to everyone who has sponsored me in the AIDS Walk so far. Expect an email from me about your allergies, flavor preferences and mailing addresses toward the end of the month :D

There's about two weeks left until the walk, so there's still time if you want to sign up or sponsor me.

AIDS WALK NEW YORK: MAY 18, 2008

Aside from that, I saw a preview screening of Iron Man last week. Now I can actually stand two superheroes.

I baked half a cake this weekend. There was a fight over the last piece. And another fight over when I'll bake it again. Awesome.

Also, with !!!, Bloc Party and The Futureheads coming back, I'm finally looking forward to concerts again. The apathy has been strong with me for far too long.

ETA: And Supergrass! How could I forget them?! LOVE!

The Verdict

I'm going to ACL. Lock up your kids and hide your livestock because I'm coming to Austin!

The festival is Friday-Sunday, but we're going Wednesday-Monday so we can actually see some of the city. Finally! I am stoked.

I have my ticket and hotel room. I probably won't be able to book a flight for somewhere between a week and month, thanks to Uncle Sam. Once all this is settled, I'll start pondering a trip to Chicago in August. Wooha!

HALP!

Please help me decide between attending Lollapalooza and Austin City Limits this year.

I want to see more of the bands at Lollapalooza, it's cheaper and will require less time off from work. But I know more people going to ACL, and if I go to ACL, I'm going to take a day or two to actually see Austin. And if I go to ACL, I'll probably be able to go to Chicago in August too see the people at that HP con instead of for Lollapalooza.

I've made an Excel spreadsheet and everything and I still can't decide, so I'm turning to you, dear Internet, to help me figure it out.

AIDS Walk 2008

I don't have the patience to organize a team this year, but I'm still walking.

On May 18, I'll be participating in the

2008 AIDS Walk New York

and would really appreciate your support.

I'm sure everyone reading this probably knows approximately 478329 people walking, but even if every person reading this just pledged $1, I think we'd raise at least three whole dollars. So yeah, every little bit helps.

I made the following offer on my food blog because the people reading it don't really know me and have no reason to send me money, but I'll post it here too:

If you're cool with giving me a mailing address (or are in the NYC area), I'll bake you something if you contribute. Seriously. And if you can't sponsor me because you're walking yourself, I'll bake you something too. My guess is it'll be cookies or muffins because I think those would be easiest to ship, but one never knows!

Donations go here, please.

Thanks!

MOAR Tickets

I now have a spare ticket for Gil Mantera's Party Dream at the Knitting Factory tomorrow AND Peelander-Z at Music Hall of Williamsburg Saturday.

People are dropping like flies and I don't know why. I shower, I swear.

Anyone want a ticket?

That Heroes Book

Has anyone read Heroes: Saving Charlie?

The library doesn't have it and, as much as I miss "Heroes", I'm not sure if I want to shell out over $16 for shmoopy nonsense. Anyone have any insight? Maybe I'll wait for the paperback (under $10, August).

*sprains arm patting self on back*

I don't usually talk about the food stuff here, but I'm so proud of myself I'm talking about it everywhere. Sorry.

Today's Purim. That means hamentashen, one of my favoritest treats in the world. This week, I baked my own for the first time ever. From my mom's recipe. I veganized it all by myself. This was my first time not asking for help selecting egg replacements or anything like that and they came out (if I do say so myself), AWESOME. Like, possibly the best hamentashen I've ever had. I didn't say that on the blog because it sounds braggy (duh), but I feel like I'm among friends here and proudly shout "HOLY CRAP, I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT CAME OUT OF MY OVEN!"

The recipe and stuff is over at the blog. If you just want pictures, check out the Flickr.

Happy holidays, everyone!

I Live

I suck at Internet lately. I haven't even updated my food blog since the beginning of the month, so don't worry, it's not like I just forgot about you all. Writing just hasn't been my thing. And I have been keeping up with you all a bit. I've been reading the Friends List on and off from my BlackBerry during my evening commute before I fall asleep. It loads slowly so I don't comment or anything. Just know that I'm still watching. I'm just judging you silently (kidding!).

So what brings me back to the Internet? I want to talk about a movie I saw last night: Chicago 10.

Chicago 10 tells the story of the Chicago 8 (later known as the Chicago 7), plus their two lawyers. It's a mash up of archive footage of the events and animation. The script for the animation was taken directly from the court transcripts of the trial. So despite the fact that you're watching a "cartoon", it's more "real" than most other movies you see, and therefore more disturbing.

All my thoughts are going behind the upcoming cut. If you don't feel like reading that, just see the movie. It hits theaters tomorrow. I don't know how wide of a release it will get, but if there's some sort of artsy fartsy indie theater in your town, or a few towns away, find it and see it. It may upset you, but sometimes we need to be upset. Also, there will be spoilers behind the aforementioned cut. Lots of them. I'm not worried about ruining the ending for anyone because this is actual, real history and something we should all know about already. The fact that most of us probably don't is an issue that's probably beyond the scope of what I'm able to discuss, but I just might try anyway.

That cut )

PS: if you're wondering about the outcome of the cookie thing, I ended up going with the 5-Spice Almond and they were quite a success. The ice cream people even took some with them to feed the people at their party in Boston (where they're opening a VEGAN ICE CREAM PARLOR) the next day.

HALP!

I realize it's rude of me to come to LJ for help when I've been so bad with it lately, but that's not stopping me from doing it anyway.

For some reason, I volunteered to bake cookies for the upcoming Wheeler's Black Label vegan ice cream party. Crazy, no? Yes. I'm kind of shitting my pants at the idea of baking for strangers right now. And I need help deciding what kind of cookies to make.

Please vote for TWO cookies from the list below. I'll make the two that get the most votes, force loads of local people to taste them and bake the one the most people like for the party. Thanks!

Which two cookies recipes seem like they'd go with ice cream best (and generally be most awesome)?
